At room temperature, it appears as a colorless, transparent to light yellow, fuming liquid with a pungent odor. It has a specific gravity of 0.98, slightly lighter than water, and a boiling point of 19.4 °C, making it highly volatile. When exposed to air, it releases white fumes. Solutions with less than 60% hydrogen fluoride are clear and fuming. Industrial grades typically contain 40 to 45% HF.
With a pungent odor, it reacts with sulfur trioxide or chlorosulfonic acid to produce fluoride sulfonic acid and can react with halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, olefins, and hydrocarbons to form ***-containing organic compounds. Dissolving in water produces a highly corrosive, medium-intensity acid. It is extremely toxic and can cause severe ulceration upon skin contact, more intense than other acids.
Inhaling its vapors can be fatal, necessitating strict safety measures during use.
It reacts with general metals, metal oxides, and hydroxides to form various metal fluoride salts, though less dramatically than hydrochloric acid. It does not react with gold, platinum, lead, paraffin, and some plastics (e.g., polyethylene), which can be used as containers.
Strong Corrosiveness
It can erode glass and silicates, producing gaseous silicon tetrafluoride. The reaction is as follows:
SiO2 + 4HF → H2O + SiF4 ↑
Since glass is a silicon compound, hydrofluoric acid cannot be stored in glass containers. It can form acid salts, being a monobasic acid capable of producing series such as NaHF2, KHF2, NH4HF2, unlike other halogen acids.
The Weak Acidity of Hydrofluoric Acid: Due to the strong bond between hydrogen and *** atoms, HF cannot fully dissociate in water. Among hydrohalic acids, only HF is a weak acid (ionization constant 3.5 × 10^-4; apparent ionization degree ~10% at 0.1mol.L^-1 concentration). HF can be reluctantly considered a strong acid, with higher ionization at higher concentrations, a property distinct from other weak electrolytes.
